What if you had done it differently?
Have any of you ever pondered about singular decisions in your lives that have lead you to where you are today? Well, I suppose you could say that all the decisions in your life have lead you to where you are today. However, I believe that decisions such as what you might happen to wear and what you eat are of less signficance than those events, that in hindsight, you know would have forever changed the outcome of your life. I'll tell you of one such incident that would have lead me on a completely and totally different path than what I would have otherwise done.
I started work at Target in 1992. I was a junior in high school at the time. It was not three months after I started working at Target that I almost walked out of the door and never returned. It had been a particularly bad evening for me. Nothing was going right. I was still being tormented by two employees, which I nicknamed Frick and Frack. These guys were utter scum. It had been a long night, bitchy customers, tornment from the malevolent Bobbsy Twins, and I had had enough. It was then that I very seriously contemplated walking out. I even walked to the door and stood there, pondering the decision I was about to make. I wanted so desperately to walk out. Perhaps I should have. Regardless, I didn't. I stayed. I walked back to my duties and continued. I continued working there; in fact, I worked there for a total of 8 years.
Now, you might be asking yourself right about now, what the hay bale does that have to do with anything? Well, I'll tell you. It was about a year later that I met my (now) ex-wife. So, if I had walked out the door, I never would have met her, or rather, the chances of my meeting her would have been greatly dimished; essentially, my life choices would have changed. The life lessons that I learned over the years would have been different. Who knows what might have happened? I certainly don't.
Now, this is not to say my life would be any better or worse on that particular time line than this one, but it does give you pause. It might make you question your motives for the decisions you make today. It might, just might, make you think about the very serious ramifications of the minor decisions in your life.
So, therefore, your life's decisions, even the ones you believe at the time will have no lasting consequenses whatsoever on your life, in reality, do.
